Cathedral of Our lady of the Assumption, Tuam wins Conservation Building of the Year 2021
We are delighted to announce that The Refurbishment of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Tuam, Co Galway has won the Conservation Building of the year award at the Irish Construction Industry Awards 2021. JJ Rhatigan & Company was the main contractor on this project that was valued at €1.8m. The project took 7 months in total and was done over two phases.
The Cathedral was first built in 1827 on a hill overlooking Tuam and was only the second Roman Catholic Cathedral to be built in the country after the Catholic Emancipation. It is the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Tuam and holds huge significance to the people of the 55 parishes and beyond. Due to the significance of the building the refurbishment of the project was done with tremendous amount of care. All refurbishment work had to be carried out with three core conservation principles; Minimum intervention to the Cathedral fabric and full reversibility of all new insertions, work to be recorded in accordance with specification and to follow best conservation international practice. With working accordance to these principles, the contemporary architectural design and the rigorous work but in by all involved the refurbishment of the Cathedral was a beautiful finished article.
The project was a great success as it was delivered within budget and was very well received by the Client and parishioners of the Tuam area.
