Maynooth Academic building completion
Our landmark project for Maynooth University was recently handed over to our client. The new Academic Building forms part of a wider plan to modernise and expand the Maynooth University campus. Spanning 10,500sqm, the facility will accommodate the rapidly growing student population at MU delivering additional teaching, meeting, and office space.
There were significant challenges during the construction of the project including Covid lockdowns and the requirement to engage a new Mechanical Subcontractor midway through the project however our team successfully finished on budget and to the timeline agreed with the client, Maynooth University.
The building was designed and constructed with efficiency in mind. All toilets are fitted with PIR valves controlling water management. All lighting is part of the Enlightened Control System which can be programmed to switch off or dim as the University requires. Sustainability is particularly important given our collective awareness and focus on the climate crisis and the facility includes rainwater harvesting and green roofs. The landscaping included wildflower gardens and bug hotels as well as mature horse chestnut trees on the perimeter which were protected throughout the duration of the build.
The building is part of the EXEED Certified Programme which includes the energy saving ECO Mode for the lecture theatres and a completely fossil fuel free heating system making this the first on this campus to be heated solely by heat pumps which will deliver both hot water and space heating.
Outstanding features include: the external facades; the impressive 500 seat lecture theatre; the ‘Tear Drop’ balcony in the main entrance; and double height classrooms.
Situated on the perimeter of the campus, on what would have been the old Galway Road, the approach to the building is certainly very striking and enhances the overall campus of Maynooth University. We are delighted to confirm that the University team are thrilled with the finished building.
Congratulations to all of the JJR team and subcontractors who played their part in delivering this superb project.
