Minister Frances Fitzgerald TD officiated the Turning of the Sod Ceremony at the new Galway Regional and Divisional Garda Headquarters at Murrough, Dublin Road, Galway. The new Headquarters has been designed by the Office of Public Works and is being constructed by JJ Rhatigan & Company. Speaking at the site Garda Commissioner Noirín O’Sullivan welcomed the investment by Government in the development of this new Regional and Divisional HQ in Galway. “This new HQ will enhance the service we provide to the people of Galway and the Western Region in terms of supporting the victims of crime and investigating crime” the Commissioner said. Padraic Rhatigan, Managing Director of JJ Rhatigan & Company, noted that “we are really looking forward to working on this Gateway Project to the City” which will result in the creation of ca. 200 jobs over a sustained 2 year period.
The new Regional Garda Headquarters will consist of a complex of buildings with a combined area of approximately 11,000m². It accommodates different building blocks that interconnect to form a secure courtyard at the centre of the site. The development will consist 2-5 storey buildings housing 21st century facilities. It will provide extensive accommodation facilities to meet the requirements of both Gardaí and members of the public, including a public office, conference, training, custody facilities, as well as accommodation for a vehicle testing garage, a firing range and victim support facilities. The scheme is designed to incorporate sustainable green design principles. It will achieve an A energy rating, has green roofs and solar panels for water heating. It will be part clad in stone to acknowledge its civic status. Construction has now commenced and will take 24 months to complete.
